Site: Onshore/Offshore Thailand

Project Duration: 2011-2013

Project Summary:

  • Regional onshore/offshore structural synthesis and basin analysis
  • Assessment and interpretation of the Gulf of Thailand 2D seismic using Kingdom software
  • Basin by basin 3D seismic interpretation and integration of horizons with regional 2D data set
  • Construction and interpretation of regional structural sections and maps onshore and offshore
  • Correlation and interpretation of borehole logs with structural cross sections
  • 3D sub-surface geological modelling of fault systems and basin by basin evolution

The Gulf of Thailand contains several structurally complex trans-tensional basins. These are made up of asymmetric grabens filled with non-marine to marginal marine Tertiary (Eocene and younger) sediments. Underlying the graben sediments are a variety of Palaeozoic marine carbonates, granitic intrusive rocks, and meta-sediments. Many of the basins contain thick sequences of oil-prone source rocks, but the limited lateral extent of these deposits, combined with variations in heat flow and depth of burial of the source rocks, causes the distribution of hydrocarbons to be complex and difficult to predict.
